Peak Hill was established when gold was discovered in 1889 and is centrally located on the Newell Highway which is the main highway link between Melbourne and Brisbane.
Even though the mine in Peak Hill is no longer active,
gold is still being found by fossickers and
mining companies in the area.
Peak Hill is 49km north of Parkes and 71km south of Dubbo.
Peak Hill is an easy drive to Dubbo Western Plains Zoo,
the Dish radio telescope near Parkes
and Goobang National Park.
Have a stroll through town, have a look at the
historic buildings, stop off at a cafe or local shops.
In summer, the local pool is the place to be.
Visit the historic gold mine which operated between 1893 and 1917. The free self-guided tours provide access to viewing areas over five open cut mines, spectacular views from the hilltop, walking trails, rest areas, and a bridge walk over the historic mine.
Parkes Observatory Visitors Centre is a must visit while you are in the area. Famous for its involvement in the first moon landing and star of the movie "The Dish", CSIRO Parkes Observatory
is located approximately 25 minues from
Double D Caravan Park. Entry to the Discovery Centre is free and there is a cafe on-site.
The Goobang National Park has a viewing platform with amazing views over the area, bush walking tracks, picnic areas, mountain biking trails and 4WD tracks.
Parkes offers many cafes, restaurants and shops, as well as a public art trail, Henry Parkes Museum, Visitor Information Centre, Aviation Museum
and Memorial Hill. It is also home to the very
popular annual Elvis Festival in January.

Yeoval is a small town which was the childhood home of Banjo Patterson, and is approximately 45 minutes drive from Peak Hill. The park along the Buckinbah Creek is home to several sculptures, including a giant sculpture of Banjo Patterson's hat and a 6 metre high abstract artwork depicting sculptor Henry Moore. The Banjo Patterson... More than a poet cafe and museum houses a collection of handwritten letters, unpublished poems, photos and memorabilia.
Taronga Western Plains Zoo at Dubbo is a 45 minute drive along the Newell Highway. It is a 300 hectare open range sanctuary which provides many opportunities to see animals from all over the world and learn more about how they live, including elephants, giraffes, rhinos and lions.
Dubbo is a vibrant regional city by the Macquarie River. Only 50 minutes drive it is the major shopping destination for the area. Dubbo has many restaurants, cafes and places to explore, including historical Old Dubbo Gaol.
Forbes is known for its grand heritage buildings, gorgeous riverbanks and leafy parks.
Explore the rich history and gold rush past, only an hour from Double D Caravan Park (via Parkes).
Condoblin is approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes drive and is close to the geographic centre of NSW. It is known for the Utes in the Paddock sculptures where twenty old utes are painted and positioned as interesting sculptures.
Approximately 40 minutes north you will find Narromine, which has a rich aviation heritage. Explore the Narromine Aviation Museum , the historic buildings, wetlands and parks.
Approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes (or an hour and a half via Dubbo) lies Wellington where you can visit Wellington Caves, explore Lake Burrendong, and take in the historic buildings.
An hour and a half north (40 minutes from Dubbo) you can take in local history at The Coo-ee Heritage Centre or Rural Museum or wander past restaurants, cafes, a bakery and retail stores
along the main road.
